Toyota Prius key replacement, by generation
Prius changed key systems more than most Toyota models — from a conventional turn-key ignition, to a dashboard slot fob, to several generations of push-button-start Smart Key. This guide covers what changed and when, so you know roughly what to expect before we confirm the exact system from your VIN.
Prius key systems, 2001–present
- Uses a conventional turn-key ignition.
- An electronic vehicle-security system works alongside the ignition key.
- A separate remote for the doors is included on vehicles equipped with one.
- The key is a fob that slides into a dashboard slot rather than a traditional ignition switch.
- Standard trims use a slot-start system; some trims add Smart Entry & Start for hands-free unlocking.
- Fobs that look similar — including different logo colors — are not guaranteed to be interchangeable; function should be confirmed rather than assumed from appearance.
- Includes a small emergency mechanical blade for manual entry.
- Uses a push-button-start Smart Key that stays in your pocket or bag.
- Several button layouts and fob configurations exist across this generation.
- Includes an emergency mechanical blade.
- Continues with a later version of Toyota’s Smart Key system.
- Exact fob compatibility should be confirmed against the vehicle rather than assumed from the model year alone.
- Includes an emergency mechanical blade.
- Uses Toyota’s current-generation Smart Key system.
- Still includes an emergency mechanical blade for manual entry.
- Exact compatibility must be confirmed against the vehicle before service.
Prius, Prius c, and Prius v use different keys
These three models are related in name only when it comes to keys. A Prius c or Prius v key is not automatically compatible with a standard Prius, and vice versa — each is identified and quoted separately from its own VIN.
Important compatibility notice — final key compatibility must be confirmed
The key images, vehicle models, and year ranges shown on this page are provided as a general identification guide and may not apply to every vehicle. The manufacturer may use different key systems within the same model year depending on trim level, production date, manufacturing location, ignition type, and factory equipment. Final compatibility must be confirmed using the vehicle’s VIN, ignition type, existing key or fob, and vehicle information before service. The images are representative examples and do not guarantee an exact visual match.
