Mechanical keys and separate remotes
A metal key turns the ignition by hand with no electronic check. A separate remote on the ring may lock and unlock the doors but does not start the Dodge.
- What you see
- A plain metal key with no buttons. Any remote is a separate piece.
- Programming
- No chip to program. The blade is cut to code or decoded from a lock; a separate remote is programmed on its own.
- All keys lost
- A new key can be cut from the key code or by decoding a lock at the vehicle.
Sentry Key transponder keys
The Sentry Key immobilizer reads a chip in the key head. Dodge shares this system with other Chrysler-family vehicles of the same era.
- What you see
- A metal key with a plastic head; many have remote buttons built in.
- Programming
- Programmed with diagnostic equipment. Some vehicles allow adding a key onboard with two working keys.
- All keys lost
- Possible at the vehicle on most models.
Security gateway (SGW) vehicles
Newer vehicles add a security gateway module that blocks unauthorized diagnostic access. Programming requires registered, authorized access.
- What you see
- The key itself looks the same; the difference is in the vehicle’s electronics.
- Programming
- We use authorized access to reach the vehicle’s modules. A generic tool without it cannot program keys.
- All keys lost
- Possible on many vehicles with authorized access; we confirm coverage by VIN before dispatch.
